Scope and Method of Study. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between racism-related stress and emotional well-being. Participants in the study were 79 African American students enrolled at a large, predominantly white university or small, historically Black university, each of which is located in the Midwest, and were recruited from various courses and campus organizations. Each student completed the Schedule of Racist Events, the Symptom Questionnaire, and a brief demographic form. Pearson's r and t-tests were used to test the five null hypotheses.Racism as Trauma According to Adams (1990), a€œprejudice and exclusion have come to be regarded as social traumata by American psychiatrya€ (p. 362).
